About the Author
I didn't realize that I was a writer until I moved away from home and started writing letters to my mother. She loved my letters. She saved them and reread them. Almost a decade after I wrote a funny letter to my Mum, she handed it to me and asked me to read it aloud, which I did. We shared a good laugh over it.
My mother was once an English teacher. Pam was very strict. Strict about pronunciation, grammar, the use of words and their overuse. She was also a voracious reader, she was always reading books. She could read more than one book a week. She would talk to me about the books, the storylines, and the authors, with great enthusiasm. My mother always wanted me to read more books. The only way I could get her to stop this was by asking her why she didn't write a book herself. She'd lived a long and interesting life and how hard could it be. Well, it is hard.
I am Farid Rifaat. I was born in Egypt and immigrated to Canada with my family as a child. Some of the events in this book happened to me, and I felt compelled to write about them. I love films and photography, which inspire my writing style. I mostly write the way I speak. I love wordy films with delicious dialog and well-crafted sentences that contain words I am unfamiliar with and have to look them up in the dictionary to get their meaning. I love films about relationships, difficulties of communication, and arguments ensued from misunderstandings. I feel that I have become a bit of an expert on the subject of communication, in all its forms. May I say this and get away with it? The Boy from Shangri-La is my first book. I live in downtown Toronto but I'm only truly alive when I travel. I think I'll read books when I travel and when I'm older. This one's for you Mum, hope you like it. RIP
